Growing up in Ventura, California was
pretty uneventful in the 60's and 70's. But looking back there are some
famous people that came from my home town. My claim to fame had always
been that I went to school with Rosannne Cash - she is a couple of years younger
than me but we never hung out together in high school.
Recently I found out that Kevin Costner is
a home town boy too... He went to a different high school than I did - across
town but he went to a junior high school right around the corner from where I
used to live and rode his bike with older kids. He could have been in the
crowd of kids I played with and I just don't remember (senior moments!)
I was in Ventura recently spending the
weekend with my sister and "reliving childhood memories". We
found out that Kevin was planning a premier of his movie this weekend in Ventura
as well as a dinner that benefited local charities. He was also putting on a
free concert Saturday night on Main Street so he could give back something to
the community. Kevin's new movie opens August 1st and the premier was July
26, 2008.
Disney had never before allowed any premier
of their movies in any cities other than Los Angeles or New York. But
Kevin had it written into his contract that if they wanted him for this movie
that they had to have the premier in Ventura, CA. So between 4:30 &
5:00 the people that were fortunate enough to attend the premier of the movie
"Swing Vote" strolled down Main Street and into the
theater.
After the movie, thousands of local
residents gathered in the streets to listen to Kevin and his band, Modern West
play many original recordings and a couple of classic hits. Shown below
are some of the photos that were taken this day. Click on the photo to
