Jed's puppy pictures

Jed was born with a small slit in his upper lip.  It must have felt funny for his mother when he nursed, because by the time he was two days old, she refused to let him nurse.  Because of that, Jed was bottle fed.

He went with us everywhere.  With a puppy-diaper bag and cardboard box he went - to the store, to work and he slept in a baby wading pool in front of our pellet stove.  Just like an infant, he woke up ever few hours to eat.  My husband and I took turns on “night puppy detail”.  As you can imagine, he is now very well socialized and people oriented.

At 15 weeks old, Jed was old enough to have his small lip split cosmetically fixed.  Three weeks later, he went to live with one of the employees at the Vet Hospital who fell in love with him while he was in having surgery .

When Jed was born, he was the heaviest puppy.  But his lip prevented him from nursing on Mom.  After loosing 1/3 of his birth weight, we started bottle feeding him.  It was touch and go for a few days but he held his own.  Then at 5 days of age he started to gain weight and he went from 9 oz to 12 oz in just 3 days.  By the time he was one week old, he was back up to his original birth weight and hasn't taken any backward steps since then.

When Jed was 2 weeks old, he was still really frail looking.  Although he was gaining weight, it wasn't as quickly as his brothers

At 3 weeks of age, Jed was beginning to put some weight on. He still looks tiny though

Jed is the most advanced of all the puppies.  He was the first to start walking and was the first to crawl out of the baby pool that he called home for the first 4 weeks.

By the time Jed was 5 weeks of age, he was starting to look like a "typical" cattle dog puppy.  Although still physically smaller than the other puppies, he is the leader of the pack!  At 6 weeks old, Jed continues to keep pace with the rest of the puppies.

At 8 weeks old, Jed is looking like a little cattle dog now.  It is wonderful to see the progression he made in such a short time.

Jed, pictured above at 4 months old, wearing his e-collar (aka cone and lamp shade).  He adapted surprisingly well to it and liked use it as a tool to go bumping against things.  After the first couple of days,   it never slowed Jed down. Jed bumped into a couple of things he shouldn't so some of his stitches popped loose.  So he went back into surgery at 4 months old to get the original stitches removed and new ones put back in to clean up the nose area.  Here he is  (on the left) after his second surgery.
This is how Jed looked the morning of his surgery to correct the split lip.  We thought he was cute then...

Here is Jed the following morning.  He is really cute now!  While he was under anesthesia, he was also neutered.
